Engagement to speak at Swansea University
On 23 April 2013, Helen gave a talk on her recently published monograph to the German department at Swansea University.
The talk formed part of a series of seminars dedicated to the elucidation of German literature, history and culture, hosted by the university’s Centre for Contemporary German Culture and the Research Institute for Arts and Humanities. The material, which explored the ideological struggle over the ‘true’ meaning and value of Spartan identification during the Second Reich and the Weimar Republic in detail, was taken from Helen’s new monograph: Sparta’s German Children: The ideal of ancient Sparta in the Royal Prussian Cadet-Corps, 1818-1920, and in National Socialist elite schools (the Napolas), 1933-1945, which has recently appeared with the Classical Press of Wales.
