When the Nazis came to Dauntsey's…
Guest lecture, presented to the 4th and 5th form History Society, Dauntsey’s School, 18 November 2014.
In 1936, a group of pupils from NPEA Oranienstein, one of the Third Reich’s elite schools, took part in an exchange with boys from Dauntsey’s School. This lecture, based on recent research on the exchange programmes which took place between the NPEA and British public schools, explored the experiences of the Dauntsey’s boys within a wider context. Helen Roche was also joined by Old Dauntseian Dick Hargreaves, who participated in the exchanges during his time at Dauntsey’s.
An article focusing on these exchange programmes has recently been published in Angermion: Yearbook for Anglo-German Literary Criticism, Intellectual History and Cultural Transfers / Jahrbuch für britisch-deutsche Kulturbeziehungen 6, 2013, pp. 101-126.
